Career profiles

Network Development Director, Richard Wenham, Birmingham

My journey

I joined UK Mail in March 2002 as Hub Manager in the South East region following a 17 year career with another company in which I rose up the ranks from Warehouse Operative to Collection & Delivery Driver, Night Trunk Driver, Supervisor, Traffic Manager, Operations Manager, Site Manager and finally National Hub Manager.

Right from day one I was kept on my toes with a whole host of exciting operational challenges in my designated area. Having proved myself more than up to the task I soon progressed to working on national network challenges ranging from site moves and franchise changes to reversing under-performance at certain specific sites. In mid-2003 I was appointed Hub Manager of both the Cambridge and Leicester depots and successfully ran the two sites in tandem.

UK Mail is a company that embraces employee development and actively encourages you to ascend, or rather race up, those rungs on the career ladder. Before long I’d been asked to participate in “Project Nimrod”, a scheme specifically set up to help UK Mail identify general managers from both within and outside the company via a series of assessment days and key assignments. As a result I was made General Manager for Network Development and tasked with providing the business with full-time project management capability. Further promotion followed in 2006 when I was offered the role of Workstream Manager for the Change Programme and charged with heading up the “Operating Disciplines” workstream.

One thing I cannot commend UK Mail for enough is its unrivalled training and development opportunities. Throughout my career here I have received unstinting support from my designated mentor as well as benefiting from bespoke training geared to my specific requirements.

Provided you have the drive and determination to succeed UK Mail will support you all the way in helping you to realise your long term goals and achieve your full potential.
