HR Advisor: Sophie Breeze, Birmingham

I joined UK Mail in September 2008, on an interim contract, as a Regional Human Resources Advisor covering the South-West of the UK. Following a successful stint in which I delivered proactive and progressive, business-focused HR services, my role became permanent and I was thrilled to be appointed to the position on a long-term basis.

Over time the HR Advisor function has expanded in line with departmental and wider company structural changes and I have lapped up the dynamic pace of life and job diversity that this has afforded me. At UK Mail you can enjoy real job flexibility and in August 2009, due to personal reasons, I was allowed to move regions to cover the North of England.

The diversity of my role

I am here to provide an efficient, accurate and effective HR advisory service to UK Mail managers and employees as well as assisting in the resolution of any HR-related issues.

As a generalist advisor, I deal with all facets of staff relations and management from recruitment, training and performance enhancement right through to TUPE, redundancy, capability and conduct. I am also heavily involved in a number departmental projects aimed at standardising internal procedures as well as revising HR policy documents.

I currently provide an HR advisory service to 18 corporate locations so, as you can imagine, life is fast-paced, challenging, ever-changing and never boring! I really enjoy the sheer variety of my work as well as the opportunity it affords to meet new and interesting people. My training and development here has been great too. As part of my induction I underwent a rigorous training programme combined with “on the job” training to provide me with more practical, hands-on experience which neatly complemented the HR skills and training I had previously acquired in Australia and the UK.

Thanks to their commitment to training and personal development I have continued to develop my theoretical and working practical knowledge of employment legislation by regularly attending seminars with UK Mail’s full support and backing.

As you would expect from one of the country’s largest express delivery companies, UK Mail offers you market leading reward and recognition schemes including competitive salaries and a comprehensive benefits package. The company is also committed to providing its staff with opportunities to progress their career via internal vacancies and dedicated training programmes.
