Warehouse Night Staff Supervisor: Zahir Hussein, Birmingham
I joined UK Mail in May 2004 as a Warehouse Operative working on the Birmingham sort. Much as I enjoyed this role and thrived on the sense of team spirit and camaraderie that prevails in the warehouse, I was determined to progress my career and realise some lifelong ambitions. Luckily for me, UK Mail shared my determination to help me reach my full potential.
Supporting my dreams... and development
After being appointed a Night Clerk - which entailed generating drivers’ run sheets, compiling reports and working on the offshore area - I got my big break when I was promoted to Night Supervisor. This afforded me responsibilities far greater than I’d enjoyed in previous roles and I happily rose to the challenge.
UK Mail even enrolled me on the Team leader NVQ programme to provide me with practical, on-the-job instruction and training. Not only did obtaining the NVQ qualification develop and hone my supervisory skills, it also increased my confidence significantly and empowered me with new competencies that were relevant to my role.
One particular source of pride is the fact that I was nominated for a Special Achievement Award by the NVQ College for my demonstration of the highest degree of development in my field. Hand-picked from 7,000 candidates, I was shortlisted to the final 20.
Embarking on the NVQ programme was certainly one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and it was all down to UK Mail’s unwavering faith in me. The benefits are already evident in the warehouse with new, improved and more efficient working practices now in operation, many as a result of my recommendation. Before I wouldn’t have had the self-belief to make these ideas happen and now I have.
None of this would have been possible without the huge commitment and support displayed by UK Mail.
